5-year renewed contract for management of Farankaraina is signed
On October 10, the final process in the renewal of the VOI contract to manage the ForĂȘt ClassĂ©e de Farankaraina was completed during a ceremony which took place in Navana. In attendance were representatives from both supporting NGOs, Fandroakando and Antongil Conservation, and members of the two VOI, FITSAFA and FINAMA. Local authorities present included local mayors, fonkotany chiefs, district representatives, representatives from the senate, staff from the office of the Chief of the Forest, and a representative from the DREDD (Department of Environment and Sustainable development). As Fandroakango NGO founders, Kevin and Claudia, were visiting Madagascar at the time, they were also present for the ceremony.
The celebration began with the national anthem and raising of the flag, followed by speeches from various dignitaries, including Fandroakando's Executive Director, Noro, and finally with the signing of the contracts. All attendees then partook in a celebratory feast of rice and zebu.
The prior 3-year forest management contract between the VOI and the government had expired in July 2023, causing a number of projects to be put on hold until the renewal of the contract. One of the most significant projects is a remarking of the boundaries within the forest. These markings are critical to mark areas where local people can use forest resources under supervision of the VOI as opposed to areas that are strictly set aside for conservation.
Some good news that resulted from the contract renewal is that the contract period is 5 years, not 3 years as in the prior contract. This was based on an evaluation of the effectiveness of the VOI and the NGO they work with. The government determined that the VOI and NGO were working well together and so awarded a longer renewal period.
